About Tarleton State University

Tarleton State University is a public, coeducational, state university located in Stephenville, which is a city in the US state of Texas that serves as the county seat of Erath County, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 15 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.

Tarleton State University was founded in 1899, as a private, liberal arts college, first starting under the name of John Tarleton Agricultural College, it current name being officially adopted in 1970, after it became a member of The Texas A&M University System (1917), and a four-year degree granting institution, by a 1959 act of the Texas Legislature.

Athletics

Tarleton State's athletic teams are known as the `Texans` and `TexAnns`, and they compete in NCAA Division II, in the Lone Star Conference.
